PIEDRA DEL COCUY AND RIO NEGRO GUAINÍA
During 9 days and 8 nights we will be exploring the triple border region of Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil, marked by natural monument La Piedra del Cocui. It´ s a unique adventure through territories where in the 18th century the Portuguese Crown searched for the Lost Golden City of “Manoa” . We will cross the forest plains of Guainía, from the basin of the Orinoco River to the basin of the Amazon River, including a visit to “Canal del Casiquiare” , a tributary that based on Humboldt´ s investigations, connects these two important fluvial systems.
We will be navigating through black water rivers due to the high concentration of tannins. The acidity of these waters avoids the proliferation of insects, so there is little presence of mosquitoes. We begin navigating up the Inírida river towards Cerros de Mavicure, decisive protagonists in the Oscar- nominated film, “El Abrazo de la Serpiente” . We will explore different rivers: Inírida, Guainía, Rio Negro and “Canal del Casiquiare” with its tributaries. This last one is where the Amazon and Orinoco waters find a common place.
We will hike up Cerros de Mavicure and Piedra del Cocui. This exploration of the extreme southeast Colombia, includes a visit to San Felipe Fort, built in 1757. Three countries, two departments, rich in nature and biodiversity. This unique journey will allow us to learn about indigenous cultures and about the colonization history of the uncharted high Rio Negro territory, while enjoying its great biological diversity and natural beauty.
